Ruby, the stone of nobility, is said to bring love, confidence, loyalty and courage and to instill stamina, vitality and strength.  Ruby, a variety of the mineral corundum, is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone.   The ruby, along with emeralds, diamonds and sapphires is considered to be one of the four precious stones. Royal City Jewellers & Loans Ltd. is home to some very lovely pieces of ruby jewelry.

- [Emeralds, the harbinger of spring](https://www.rcj.ca/2014/05/06/emeralds/): The green of the emerald is the colour of life and springtime.  It has, for centuries, been the colour of beauty and constant love.  Its magnificent green is a colour which conveys harmony, love of nature and elemental joie de vivre. The lively luminosity of its colour makes the emerald a unique gemstone.  Really good quality is fairly rare, with inclusions often marring the evenness of the colour.  Fine inclusions, however, do not by any means diminish the high regard in which it is held.  Even with inclusions, an emerald in a deep, lively green has a much higher value than an almost flawless emerald whose colour is paler.  Top quality , fine emeralds are even more valuable than Diamonds. - [TANZANITE    Do you remember the color of Elizabeth Taylors Eyes?](https://www.rcj.ca/2014/05/02/tanzanite-remember-color-elizabeth-taylors-eyes/): Tanzanite is the blue purple variety of the mineral Zoisite discovered in the Merani  Hills in Northern Tanzania in 1967.  Tanzanite is a gemstone which, naturally formed,  is extremely rare.  Tanzanite is usually a reddish brown in its rough state, requiring artificial heat treatment to bring out the blue violet of the stone. Since heat treatment is universal, it has no effect on price, and finished goods are assumed to be heat treated.  Gemological Institute of America states that the source of heating is gemologically undetectable, but is assumed because of its prevalence.

- [Fifth Avenue](https://www.rcj.ca/2014/03/08/avenue/): Do you remember Big Bad Dog by Fredrick  Prescott?  Well, we have just come into possession of an indoor steel kinetic sculpture by the same widely acknowledged artist.  Fredrick Prescott is recognized for his high level of technical proficiency combined with the whimsy of  his subjects.  Movement and surprise are key elements of a Prescott sculpture.  The technical construction creates balance, while the spatial planes lend movement.  Prescott is constantly recreating himself, yet one can find a common thread throughout his work in the combination of a passion for life and a passion for art.  Prescott has exhibited his work internationally in over one hundred one man exhibitions and his work is included in the permanent collections of many important museums.1
- [Playboy magazines 1953-1990](https://www.rcj.ca/2013/09/23/playboy-magazines/): Gentlemen, you will be pleased to know that  Royal City Jewellers and Loans is the proud possessor of the complete collection of Playboy magazine issues dated from 1953 to 1990.  I have been asked to blog about this and since I think this is an interesting project but, knowing that our collection is in pristine condition, I went in search of a copy I could actually dog-ear.  I was even prepared to buy one.  It seems, however, most newsstands do not keep them on display for very long.  Even though I was told they would save an issue for me when the next order came in, I was not prepared to wait.  I then started asking my male friends if I could borrow a copy from them.  The answer was invariably no.  So, either they did not own one, do not want to admit to owning one, or they are  not willing  to part with them.  My guess is the latter, since Hugh Hefner's net worth in September 2009 was $43 million.  This was the estimated figure filed in his divorce with Kimberly Conrad.1 I did, however, manage to find some random copies.  You know the line " I only buy Playboy for the articles";  well, to my amazement, the articles are excellent, informative, and topical.  Clearly each edition makes a statement on life in North America on that particular date, and the progression of dates makes an ongoing commentary on all aspects of life depicting the path we have taken from 1953 to 1990.  This collection of Playboy magazines has serious historical as well as artistic value.
